Rupert Scholz (born 23 May 1937) is a German politician. He was an important member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. He is best known for serving as the German Federal Minister of Defence in the late 1980s.
Early Life and Education
Rupert Scholz was born in Berlin, Germany, on May 23, 1937. In 1957, he finished high school, which is called Abitur in Germany. After high school, he went to university. He studied law and economics at the Free University of Berlin and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
He worked very hard in his studies. In 1961, he passed his first big law exam. Later, in 1966, he earned his doctorate degree in law from the University of Munich. This is like getting a very advanced degree. He became a professor of law at the Free University of Berlin in 1972. In 1978, he moved to the University of Munich to teach law there. He taught at the university until he retired in 2005.
His Journey in Politics
Rupert Scholz began his political career in Berlin. From 1981 to 1983, he was the Senator for Justice in Berlin. A Senator in this case is like a minister in charge of a specific area for the city. He also served as the Senator for Federal Affairs from 1982 to 1988. This role involved dealing with matters between Berlin and the national government.
In 1983, Scholz officially joined the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) party. This is one of the main political parties in Germany. He was a member of the Berlin state parliament, called the Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin, from 1985 to 1988.
Later, from 1990 to 2002, he was a member of the Bundestag. The Bundestag is like Germany's national parliament, where laws are made. He was a leader in his party's group in the Bundestag from 1994 to 1998. From 1998 to 2002, he led the Legal Committee, which deals with laws and legal issues.
Becoming Defence Minister
On May 18, 1988, Rupert Scholz was given a very important job. He became the Federal Minister of Defence for West Germany. This meant he was in charge of the country's military and defense. He served in this role under Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
He held this position for about a year. In 1989, another politician named Gerhard Stoltenberg took over the role of Defence Minister. After his time as minister, Scholz continued to be active in politics. He shared his ideas about Germany's defense needs and its role in the world.
