A Look at Rural's Past
Rural started growing around 1851. Settlers from the Yankee region were attracted to the area. They saw great potential for building mills along the Crystal River.
Many early settlers built homes in the Greek Revival style. They hoped that a new railroad would pass through Rural. This would connect the towns of Berlin and Stevens Point. They believed it would bring a big economic boost to their community.
However, the railroad ended up bypassing Rural. It went to Waupaca, a town further north, instead. This caused Rural's growth to slow down. For about 40 years, almost no new houses were built in the area.
