The Russellville Historic District in Russellville, Kentucky, is a special area in south central Kentucky. It's known for having many old and important buildings. This district is the largest of its kind for towns of similar size in Kentucky, covering fifty city blocks. Unlike many other county seats in Kentucky, this historic district focuses on the main business area, not just the county courthouse.

Exploring Russellville's Historic District
The Russellville Historic District is a place where you can step back in time. It shows how the town grew and changed over many years.
Buildings from the Past
Many buildings in the district were built between the late 1700s and the 1800s. The most important ones were constructed between 1800 and 1830. These include the homes of four people who later became governors of Kentucky. Even newer buildings in the district are designed to look like the older ones.
Historically, the wealthier families in Russellville lived in the southwestern part of the district. Irish immigrants who helped build the local railroad lived northwest of the district's cemetery. You can also see some beautiful Victorian-style buildings here. These buildings were built after the American Civil War and have unique roof styles for Kentucky.

The Russellville Historic District has a rich history with many significant events.
A Government Formed
It was in the William Forst House within this district that a temporary government for Kentucky was formed during the American Civil War. This event is remembered by the Confederate Monument in Russellville.
The Jesse James Robbery
The district is also famous for being the site of the first bank robbery by the well-known outlaw, Jesse James. In 1868, he robbed the Nimrod Long Banking Company, taking $9,000.
A Future President's Duel
Even a future United States President, Andrew Jackson, once fought a duel in this historic district.
Russellville's Early Days
Russellville was once known as a place where people could get a "fresh start." Many early settlers moved there to begin new lives. The very first house in the district was built in 1790, but it is no longer standing today.
