Rutherford George Montgomery (born April 12, 1894 – died July 3, 1985) was an American writer. He wrote many books for children. Besides his real name, he also used other names like A.A. Avery, Al Avery, Art Elder, E.P. Marshall, and Everitt Proctor.

About Rutherford George Montgomery's Life

Rutherford George Montgomery was born in a place called Straubville, Sargent County, North Dakota. This town was a "ghost town" by 2005, meaning it was mostly empty. His parents were George Y. and Matilda Proctor Montgomery.

He went to several colleges, including Colorado Agricultural College. He also studied at Western State College of Colorado and the University of Nebraska. After his studies, he taught elementary school in Hot Springs, Wyoming. From 1917 to 1919, he served in the United States Air Corps.

During the 1920s, Montgomery worked as a teacher. He was also a principal at junior and senior high schools in Montrose County, Colorado. In 1930, he married Eunice Opal Kirks, and they had three children together.

He served as a judge for Gunnison County, Colorado from 1931 to 1936. He was also a county commissioner from 1932 to 1938. After these jobs, he became a full-time writer.

Montgomery started writing stories about wild animals when he was still in school. These animals lived near his family's farm. Later, he wrote books about flying and the American West. He especially loved writing about horses. In total, he wrote more than 100 books!

From 1941 to 1946, he worked as a writer for the famous comic strip Dick Tracy. He also taught creative writing from 1955 to 1957. From 1958 to 1962, he was a scriptwriter for Walt Disney Studios.
