Ruthven is a ghost town located in Wilcox County, Alabama. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and very few or no buildings remain. Ruthven got its name from a place in England called Ruthven.
This town was once a busy place for cutting down trees (a lumber town) in the early 1900s. It officially became a town in 1924. Ruthven was found near Pine Apple along Bear Creek. It was also close to a railroad line that went from Selma to Flomaton. Today, this area is known as County Road 2.
In 1930, Ruthven had 523 people living there. This made it the second largest town in Wilcox County, right after Camden. But soon after, the town stopped being an official town. It quickly became much smaller. Not much is left of Ruthven today because most of its buildings were taken apart. There was also a post office in Ruthven for a while.
