Río Bravo, also known as Ciudad Río Bravo, is a city located in northeastern Mexico. It sits right on the northern border of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. This city is also the main town, or "municipal seat," of the Río Bravo Municipality.
Where is Río Bravo?
The city of Río Bravo is in an area called the Lower Rio Grande Valley. It is located on the south side of a big river known as the Río Bravo del Norte. In the United States, this river is called the Rio Grande. The city was named after this important river.
Río Bravo is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of the border between Mexico and Texas in the United States. It is located to the east of another city called Reynosa. If you cross the border and the Donna – Río Bravo International Bridge over the river, you will find the towns of Scissors and Donna in Texas.
The Río Bravo Municipality stretches south into areas that are not as crowded. It is slowly becoming a busy place for factories and businesses. It is conveniently located along the highway that connects Reynosa and Matamoros. A main road, Mexican Federal Highway 2, goes through the city and runs parallel to the border.
How Many People Live Here?
In 2010, a count of the population showed that 95,647 people lived in Río Bravo. This made it the eighth largest city in the state of Tamaulipas. Other larger cities include Reynosa, Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Victoria, Tampico, Madero, and Miramar.
The entire Río Bravo Municipality had a population of 118,259 people. It covers an area of about 1,562.94 square kilometers (603.45 square miles). The next biggest community within the municipality is Nuevo Progreso. It is located in the northeastern part of the municipality, right on the Río Bravo/Rio Grande river.
