Discovering Reynosa's Past
Reynosa has a long and interesting history. It started as a small village and grew into a big city.
Early Explorations and Founding
- 1686: Agustín Echeverz y Zuvízar, a governor, camped in the area that is now Reynosa. He was on an exploration trip.
- 1748: An expedition led by José de Escandón y Helguera left from Querétaro. Their goal was to create 14 new villages. This group included 1,500 settlers and 755 soldiers.
- 1749: On March 14, the village of Villa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Reinosa was officially founded. Captain Carlos Cantú established it for Escandón. There were 279 first settlers, guided by Friar Agustín Fragoso.
- Naming the City: The city was named Reynosa after Reinosa, a town in Spain. This was the birthplace of the viceroy Juan Francisco de Güemes y Horcasitas.
Challenges and Growth
- 1750: The village experienced its first recorded flood.
- 1757: Reynosa had its first political issue. Escandón replaced Carlos Cantú as mayor with Pedro de Estrada.
- 1757 Census: On July 9, inspectors arrived to count the population. They found 280 people living in Reynosa.
- Moving the Village: After the census, the King of Spain allowed the village to move to a safer spot. However, Escandón decided the river was not a flood risk anymore, so the move didn't happen right away.
- 1800: A huge flood covered the village. People used canoes to reach higher ground.
- 1802: The village finally moved to its current location. A new count showed 1,631 inhabitants.
- 1810: Construction began on the old church, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. It was finished in 1815.
Modern Times in Reynosa

- 1910: General Lucio Blanco and his army took control of Reynosa during the Mexican Revolution.
- 1926: On November 24, Reynosa officially became a city.
