Säter is a cool place in Sweden. It's a "locality," which means it's like a town or a small city. Säter is also the main town, or "seat," of Säter Municipality in Dalarna County. In 2020, about 11,161 people lived there.
Even though Säter has a smaller population, people often still call it a "city." This is because of its long history. However, Statistics Sweden (the official group that counts things in Sweden) only calls places with more than 10,000 people "cities" today.

Säter's Early History
Säter has a really interesting past. Long ago, there was a special royal house here called Säter's Royal Mansion. It was a big and important building.
Sweden's First Copper Mint
In 1624, something very important happened in Säter. Sweden's very first copper "mint" was built here. A mint is a place where money, like coins, is made. Säter was chosen because it was close to a big copper mine in Falun. A few years before the mint, a "tannery" was also built in Säter. A tannery is a place where animal skins are turned into leather.
Founding of the Town
The town of Säter was officially started in 1630. Even today, if you visit the old part of Säter, you can see many wooden houses and streets that look just like they did back then. Not many Swedish cities have kept their old look so well! One of the oldest buildings still standing is the city hall.
On May 8, 1642, Queen Christina of Sweden gave Säter its official "charter." This made Säter one of the recognized Cities in Sweden. The special symbol chosen for Säter, its "coat of arms," showed a miner. This was a nod to the important copper mining nearby.
Säter Today
Säter is known for a large building called the Säter hospital. It opened in 1912. At that time, it was the biggest hospital of its kind in Sweden. It's a very important part of Säter's history.
