History of the Club
Early Years and Serie B
The club was first started in 1923 with the name U.S. Sambenedettese. For many years, the team played in lower leagues. A big moment for the club came in 1956 when it was promoted to Serie B, the second-highest football league in Italy.
Sambenedettese played in Serie B for 21 seasons in total. During the 1980s, a young goalkeeper named Walter Zenga, who later became a famous player for Italy's national team, played for the club. The team's last season in Serie B was in 1989.
A History of New Beginnings
Sambenedettese has faced many challenges over the years, especially with money. When a club has serious money problems, it can go bankrupt. This means it has to stop playing and often needs to start over from a lower league. This has happened to Sambenedettese several times.
- 1994: The club went bankrupt and had to restart in Eccellenza, a regional league.
- 2000s: The team was bought by a new owner and by 2002, it had climbed back up to Serie C1, a professional league. However, by 2009, the club had to start over from Eccellenza again.
- 2013: The team won its league in Serie D but was not allowed to be promoted because of problems with its paperwork. The club was refounded again as A.S.D. Sambenedettese Calcio and started over in Eccellenza, winning promotion back to Serie D right away.
- 2016: Sambenedettese was promoted back to the professional leagues, then called Lega Pro (now Serie C).
- 2021: After another change in ownership, the club once again had money troubles and was declared bankrupt.
A new owner, Roberto Renzi, bought the rights to the club's name and it was refounded as A.S. Sambenedettese. The new club was allowed to stay in Serie C after paying its debts. However, it was later moved down to Serie D for not meeting financial rules.
In 2023, the club was again removed from Serie D. The club's name and history were then given to another team from the same area, Porto d'Ascoli, which now plays as U.S. Sambenedettese.
