S. Arthur Spiegel (born October 24, 1920 – died December 31, 2014) was an important United States district judge. He served in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

Early Life and Career
S. Arthur Spiegel was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1942.
Military Service
After college, Spiegel joined the United States Marine Corps. He served during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He fought in the Pacific region and reached the rank of captain.
Becoming a Lawyer
After his military service, Spiegel went to Harvard Law School. He received his law degree in 1948. From 1948 to 1980, he worked as a private lawyer in Cincinnati.
Serving as a Judge
On April 14, 1980, President Jimmy Carter chose S. Arthur Spiegel to become a federal judge. He was nominated for a position on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
Confirmation and Role
The United States Senate approved his nomination on May 21, 1980. He officially became a judge on May 23, 1980. On June 5, 1995, he took on "senior status" as a judge. This means he could still hear cases but with a reduced workload.
Later Life and Legacy
Judge Spiegel wrote a book called A Trial On Its Merits. It was published in 2009. He continued to hear cases almost until the end of his life.
Family Life
S. Arthur Spiegel passed away on December 31, 2014, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He and his wife had four sons.
