Sedapatti Suryanarayana Rajendran, often called SSR, was a famous Indian actor, director, producer, and politician. He was well-known for his work in Tamil plays and movies. He was born in January 1928 and passed away on October 24, 2014.

SSR's Film Journey
SSR started his acting career in 1952 with the movie Parasakthi. He played the character Gnanasekharan in this film. After his first movie, he acted in many other popular films.
Some of his notable movies include Mudhalali, President Panchatcharam, and Poompuhar. He also worked with other big stars of his time. For example, he acted alongside M. G. Ramachandran in movies like Raja Desingu and Kaanji Thalaivan.
SSR also appeared in many films with Sivaji Ganesan. These include Manohara, Rangoon Radha, Aalayamani, and Pachai Vilakku.

He had his own drama group called SSR Nadaka Mandram. This group performed many plays, including Or Iravu and Manimagudam. SSR also helped new actors, like the famous actress Manorama, get their start in the industry.
One of his films, Saradha, was a big hit. Its success led to the creation of Saradha Studios. Another successful film was Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum in 1958, where he starred with Raja Sulochana.
SSR's Family Life
SSR had a large family with eight children. Their names are Elangovan, Rajendrakumar, Kalaivanan, Bhagyalakshmi, Selvaraj, Ravikumar, Kannan, and Lakshmi Sitara.
SSR's Political Career
SSR was not just an actor; he was also a dedicated politician. He joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. In 1962, he made history by becoming the first actor in India to be elected to a legislative assembly. He won a seat in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from the Theni area.
Later, he also became a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He then joined another political party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). In 1980, he was elected from the Andipatti area. He was good friends with M.G.R. and Kalaingar, who were also important political figures.
SSR's Beliefs and Ideals
Rajendran was a strong follower of Periyar E. V. Ramasamy's ideas of rationalism. This meant he believed in using reason and logic. Because of this, he never acted in movies that were based on old myths or religious stories. He was known as "Latchiya Nadigar," which means "Idealistic Actor," because he always stuck to his principles in his film choices.
SSR's Passing
In October 2014, Rajendran was admitted to a hospital in Chennai because of a lung infection. He passed away a few days later, on October 24, 2014.
