Savoia 1908 is an Italian football club from Torre Annunziata, a town in Campania, Italy. The team currently plays in a league called Eccellenza.

Savoia is one of the oldest football clubs in southern Italy. It was started on November 21, 1908, by a group of local business owners. The club's main color is white, which represents flour. Flour was a very important product for Torre Annunziata's economy back then.

The team's symbol is a special shield linked to the old Savoy royal family. Savoia plays its home games at the Alfredo Giraud Stadium. In 1924, they won the championship for Southern Italy. This allowed them to play against Genoa, who were the national champions.

History of Savoia Football Club

Early Years and Name Changes

The club was founded in 1908 as Unione Sportiva Savoia. It was named after the Italian royal family of that time. In 1924, the team reached the Italian Serie A league finals. They played against Genoa C.F.C. but lost.

In 1915, the club officially joined the Italian Football Federation. Their first official tournament was the International Cup in Naples in 1916. They finished in 3rd place in that competition.

During World War I, Savoia won a local championship. After the war, they joined the First Category league in 1920. Around this time, the club also welcomed another local team, Pro Italia. A new home field, the Campo Oncino, opened on June 13, 1920.

Golden Age and the 1924 Final

Savoia had a very successful period in the early 1920s. They won the Campania championship three times in a row. They also became champions of central-southern Italy. This led them to the big 1924 national championship final against Genoa.

Northern Italian teams usually beat southern teams easily back then. But Savoia made history. They lost the first game 3–1. However, in the second game, they managed a 1–1 draw. This made them the first club from central-southern Italy to avoid a loss against the powerful northern champions.

The coach during this successful time was Raffaele Di Giorgio. The team's lineup included players like Visciano, Nebbia, and Bobbio.

Post-War Challenges and Rebuilding

In the 1930s, the club changed its name to Fascio Sportivo Savoia for a few years. They regularly played in Serie C until after World War II. During this time, the club changed its name several times. It became Football Association Torre Annunziata and then Spolettificio Torre Annunziata. This last name was for a military team.

In 1944, due to political reasons, the club had to remove the Savoy emblem and change its name. It became Ilva Torrese and then Unione Sportiva Torrese. After the war, in 1945–46, Torrese finished fourth. Thanks to other teams dropping out, they were promoted to Serie B for the first time.

In the 1946–47 season, Savoia reached its highest point ever, finishing sixth in Serie B. However, the league was reorganized, and they returned to Serie C in 1948. From then on, the club faced many challenges. They were relegated four times and only promoted once. In 1955, the club faced financial difficulties and had to stop playing. Their home field, Campo Formisano, also closed.

New Beginnings and Promotions

In 1955, a new club started up again as Unione Sportiva Savoia 1908. They had to begin in lower leagues like Serie D and even Promozione. But they worked hard and earned two promotions in a row in 1964 and 1965. This brought Savoia back to Serie C, though they only stayed for one season.

In 1978–79, Savoia joined the new Serie C2 division. They played there until 1981–82. Eight years later, Savoia returned to Serie C2. In 1994–95, under coach Luigi De Canio, they were promoted to Serie C1 after winning the playoffs.

Rise to Serie B Playoffs

In the 1998–99 season, with coach Osvaldo Jaconi, Savoia had a great run. They qualified for the Serie B promotion playoffs. In the semifinals, Savoia surprisingly beat Palermo in both games. Then, in the final, they defeated their rivals Juve Stabia 2–0. This win meant Savoia was promoted to Serie B!

In the 1999–2000 Serie B season, Savoia started well but then struggled. Coach Jaconi was replaced, but the team couldn't avoid being relegated. After another tough season in Serie C1 in 2000–01, Savoia faced money problems again and had to close down.

However, a club from Naples called Internapoli moved to Torre Annunziata. They changed their name to Intersavoia and quickly got promoted to Serie D. After that, they took back the old name, Savoia.

At the end of the 2008–09 Serie D season, the club was relegated to Eccellenza. But they were then removed from that league the next season.

Recent History and Refoundings

In the summer of 2010, the club was refounded again as A.S.D. Calcio Savoia. They started from the Promozione league. In the 2010–11 season, they were promoted to Eccellenza Campania. They then changed their name to the current one. The very next season, they were promoted again, this time to Serie D.

In the 2013–14 season, Savoia won their Serie D group and were promoted to Lega Pro. However, they were relegated back to Serie D the following season.

In the 2017–18 season, they won the Eccellenza Campania league and were promoted to Serie D. In the summer of 2018, the club was renamed U.S. Savoia 1908.

In 2021, the club moved back to Eccellenza. This happened after they swapped their football title with Giugliano.

In November 2022, the club was bought by a group led by Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, Prince of Venice. He became the new chairman of the club.
