What is SXSW?
SXSW brings together creative people from all over the world. They come to share ideas, show off new projects, and enjoy performances. It's a place where you can discover new bands, see exciting movies, and learn about the latest tech trends.
SXSW Music Festival
The SXSW Music Festival is the biggest music festival in the world! In 2014, more than 2,000 different bands and artists performed.
When it first started in 1987, about 700 people came to the music event. By 2009, over 32,000 people had signed up to attend.
Bands and musicians usually pay for their own travel and places to stay. Performers get a small payment or a special wristband. This wristband lets them go to all the music events.
SXSW Film Festival
The SXSW Film Festival is a big part of the event. It has two main parts: a conference and a festival.
Film Conference
The SXSW Film Conference lasts for five days. During this time, expert filmmakers and leaders from the movie industry give talks and workshops. They also offer special "mentor sessions" where you can get advice.
In 2015, there were over 250 sessions with 735 speakers. Many famous people have spoken at the conference. Some of them include Lena Dunham, Jon Favreau, Ryan Gosling, Nicolas Cage, Tilda Swinton, Amy Schumer, Matthew McConaughey, and Robert Rodriguez.
Movie Screenings
The SXSW Film Festival shows movies for nine days. On the last day of the Film Conference, there is an awards ceremony for the best films.
In 2015, the festival showed 150 full-length movies and 106 short movies. These were chosen from over 7,300 movies that were submitted! Many popular movies and TV shows have been shown for the first time at SXSW. Some examples include Furious 7, Neighbors, Chef, 21 Jump Street, and the TV series Girls and Silicon Valley.
Even though the festival often shows independent movies (movies made outside of big studios), large movie studios also use SXSW. They sometimes show their new comedies here before they are released. This helps them see how much people like the movie.
SXSW Interactive
SXSW Interactive is all about new technology and digital media. This part of the festival includes a big trade show where companies show off their new products. There are also speakers, parties, and a special program for new companies called a "startup accelerator."
According to one of the festival's organizers, Louis Black, SXSW Interactive has been "the biggest of its kind in the world" since 2007. It's a great place to see what's new and exciting in the world of tech!
