The Sacramento River is a short river in Mexico. It is the main branch of the Chuvíscar River. The Chuvíscar River then flows into the Rio Conchos. The Rio Conchos runs entirely through the state of Chihuahua. Finally, the Rio Conchos joins the larger Río Bravo.
A River of History
The Sacramento River might be short, but it played a big role in history. On February 28, 1847, an important battle happened right along its banks. This battle was part of the Mexican–American War.
The Battle of the Sacramento
During the war, the Mexican Army took a strong defensive position near the river. They were about fifteen miles north of Chihuahua. An advancing U.S. Army attacked them there. The fight is known as the Battle of the Sacramento. The U.S. Army won this battle. Their victory allowed them to enter and occupy Chihuahua without any further fighting on March 2.
