Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic church in the centre of Liverpool, England. You can find it on the corner of Low Hill and the A57 road, right next to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. This beautiful church is a special building, listed as Grade II. This means it is considered historically important. It first opened its doors in 1886. The church was designed by a team of architects called Goldie, Child & Goldie. Inside, you'll find a stunning altar piece created by the famous Pugin and Pugin firm.
History of Sacred Heart Church
Before this church was built, Catholic people in the area used to pray in a small chapel. This chapel was located at a nearby convent on Mount Vernon Street. As more and more Catholic families moved into Liverpool, the small chapel became too crowded. There wasn't enough space for everyone to worship comfortably.
So, plans were made to build a much larger church. Sacred Heart Church officially opened in 1886. The main parts of the church, like the large open area (called the nave) and the outside walls, were designed by the architectural firm of George Goldie, Goldie, Child & Goldie Ltd.
Other famous architects also worked on the church. Augustus Pugin's firm, Pugin & Pugin, designed the special area around the altar (called the sanctuary) in the 1890s. Another firm, Sinnott, Powell & Sinnott, built the church hall in 1894. This firm also designed Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Seaforth, Merseyside.
Originally, you could enter the church from Mount Vernon Street. However, when the Royal Liverpool University Hospital was built, that road became private for the hospital. Because of this, the old entrance was closed off. Today, the main way to get into the church is from the other side, along Low Hill.
Community and Services
After the year 2000, Sacred Heart Church joined with a nearby church, St. Michael's Church. Together, they became one larger parish called St. Michael and the Sacred Heart. A parish is like a local community of churches.
The church has a very close connection with the nearby Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. Students from the school often visit the church for special events and learning trips. They also sometimes visit the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.
There are many Catholic churches in this area of Liverpool. To make sure people can attend Mass easily, Sacred Heart Church holds its Sunday Mass at a special time. This time does not clash with the services at other churches, like St Francis Xavier Church. The main Mass for Sunday at Sacred Heart is held on Saturday evening at 6:30 pm. St. Michael's church, which is part of the same parish, has its Sunday Mass at 10:30 am.
