Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic church. It is located in the small village of Plumbridge. This village is in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The church was built a long time ago, in 1896. It is also a special building. It has a "Grade B2 listed" status. This means it is important and protected.
The Church's Story
Building the Church
Sacred Heart Church was built in 1896. Before this church, there was another Catholic chapel in Plumbridge. That chapel was there as early as 1833. A graveyard was added to it in 1888.
The land for the new Sacred Heart Church was chosen in 1894. A person named John MacFarland leased this land. The church still has most of its original outside parts. It first appeared on a map in 1905. This was on the Third Edition of the Ordnance Survey map.
Important Updates and Recognition
In 1950, a local person gave £100. This money helped pay for repairs to the church tower. The church was given its special "Grade B2 listed" status on November 2, 1989. This status means the building is historically important.
The Department for Communities said the church kept its original look. Both the inside and outside were mostly unchanged. They also said it was "one of the most significant buildings in Plumbridge." After getting this status, the inside of the church was updated in 1990. New pews (church benches) were put in. New doors were also installed. A special plaque was placed at the bottom of the church tower. It remembers these updates.
Recent Challenges
In 2017, the church faced a challenge. It was damaged by flooding. This led to a fundraising effort to help with repairs. A local singer held a concert. They raised over £2,000 to help the church.
