How Sadorus Began

Sadorus was first settled in April 1824 by a person named Henry Sadorus. This makes it the oldest town in Champaign County.

Train Accident in Sadorus

On February 21, 2011, a train had an accident while passing through the village. Two cars carrying grain tipped over. Three or four other cars also went off the tracks into a nearby field. Luckily, the train had already passed the homes in the village, so no one was hurt. It is thought that wet ground under the tracks caused the accident.

Sadorus Rock: A Giant Stone

The Sadorus Rock is a very large stone that was once found in a local field. Around 2003, it was moved to the front of the Sadorus Park. It was first called "Pioneer Rock." On October 30, 1932, it was renamed "Sadorus Rock" to honor Henry Sadorus, the village founder. Scientists believe this huge rock was left behind by melting glaciers at the end of the last ice age.

National Museum of Ship Models and Sea History

Sadorus is home to the National Museum of Ship Models and Sea History. This museum opened in 2001. It is a non-profit museum that displays many detailed ship models. It also has a collection of rare books about the sea and its history.
