Protecting Queen Elizabeth I
This law was put in place to make sure Queen Elizabeth I was safe. It also aimed to stop anyone from trying to take her place on the throne. The law was very serious about protecting the Queen's life and her rule.
What the Law Required
The Safety of the Queen Act set up a special group to investigate threats. This group was made up of at least 24 important people. These included peers (important nobles) and privy councillors (close advisors to the Queen).
Their job was to look into several things:
- Any open invasion or rebellion happening in England.
- Any attempt to harm Queen Elizabeth I.
- Any attempt by someone claiming to be the rightful ruler (a pretender) to take the throne.
Punishments for Breaking the Law
If someone was found guilty by this special group, they faced very serious consequences.
- They would not be allowed to inherit the throne. This meant they could never become king or queen.
- They would be pursued by all the Queen's subjects. This meant they would face severe punishment.
- Any action that could shorten the Queen's life was considered a very serious crime. People found guilty of such actions faced the highest penalties.
