Location in Alaska

Sagchudak Island (sometimes spelled Sagtchudakh) is a small island in the Andreanof Islands. This group of islands is part of the larger Aleutian Islands chain. You can find it in the southwestern part of Alaska.

Sagchudak Island is shaped a bit like a rectangle. It is about 1.4 miles (2.3 km) long and 0.6 miles (1 km) wide. The island is located about 0.93 miles (1.5 km) off the southern coast of Atka Island.

Island Name and History

The name Sagchudak is very similar to the original name given by the native Aleut people. This name first appeared on maps and charts in the early 1850s.

Foxes on the Island

In the early 1900s, the United States government started a program. They put foxes on many islands in the Aleutians, including Sagchudak. This was done for fur trading and hunting purposes.

Why were foxes moved?

Sagchudak Island itself was not a place where foxes were directly hunted. However, some foxes were sometimes caught there. They were then moved to or from the island. This helped keep the different fox groups healthy. It also made sure there was enough variety in their families across the islands.
