Saginaw Aquifer facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Saginaw Aquifer is like a giant underground sponge that holds water. It's a special type of water source called a bedrock aquifer, found deep beneath the ground in central Michigan, USA. Imagine a huge natural reservoir hidden away!

This aquifer is part of a bigger system of water-holding rocks in the Michigan Basin. The rocks that make up the Saginaw Aquifer were formed a very long time ago, during a period called the Mississippian. These rock layers are like pages in a history book, each telling us about Earth's past.

What is the Saginaw Aquifer?

The Saginaw Aquifer is a massive underground area filled with water. It stretches across about 11,000 square miles (28,000 km2) of land. That's a huge area, bigger than many countries! This underground water storage is estimated to hold about 4 cubic miles (17 km3) of water. To give you an idea, that's enough water to fill many, many lakes!

Where is the Water?

The water in the Saginaw Aquifer isn't right at the surface. It's hidden deep underground, usually between 50 feet (15 m) and 400 feet (120 m) below your feet. This depth helps keep the water clean and protected.

Fresh Water and Salt Water

Interestingly, the Saginaw Aquifer holds both fresh water and salt water.

  • Fresh water is the kind we can drink and use every day. It's found in certain parts of the aquifer.
  • Salt water is like ocean water, too salty to drink. It's usually found deeper or in different sections of the aquifer. The presence of salt water is often due to ancient seas that once covered the area.

How is the Aquifer Used?

The fresh water parts of the Saginaw Aquifer are super important for many communities in Michigan.

Drinking Water for Cities

Many towns and cities use this aquifer as their main source of water. For example, people living in Clinton, Ingham, and Eaton counties, which include the Lansing-East Lansing Metropolitan Area, get their tap water from here. This is called "municipal water" because it's supplied to a whole city or town.

More Than Just Drinking

While drinking water is vital, it's not the only way the aquifer's water is used. Only a tiny fraction, about 0.03 percent, of the aquifer's water is used for drinking. The rest is used for other important things:

  • Domestic use: This means water used in homes for things like showering, washing clothes, flushing toilets, and watering gardens.
  • Industrial use: Factories and businesses also need a lot of water for their operations, like cooling machinery, cleaning, or as an ingredient in products.

Protecting Our Underground Water

Aquifers like the Saginaw Aquifer are precious natural resources. It's very important to protect them from pollution. When rain falls, it soaks into the ground and slowly makes its way down to the aquifer. If there are harmful chemicals or waste on the surface, they can also seep into the ground and contaminate the water supply. That's why we need to be careful about what we put on the land.
