Yunus Özyavuz (born August 17, 1978), known by his stage name Sagopa Kajmer, is a famous Turkish rapper, singer, songwriter, and DJ. He was also known as DJ Mic Check and Silahsız Kuvvet earlier in his career. He is the only rapper who has performed concerts in all 81 provinces of Turkey.

Yunus was born in Samsun in 1978. He finished his primary and high school education there. He started working as a DJ at a local radio station in Samsun. Later, he moved to Istanbul to study Persian Language and Literature at Istanbul University. He has shared that his early music influences came from his father's African music and his mother's Italian music.

In 1998, he started the hip hop group Kuvvetmira. He began his music journey using the name "Silahsız Kuvvet." In 1999, he was featured on the album Yeraltı Operasyonu. He later changed his stage name to Sagopa Kajmer and released an album called Sagopa Kajmer in 2002. After that, he released Bir Pesimistin Gözyaşları in 2004. He also helped create music for the movie G.O.R.A. that same year.

In 2005, he released another album, Romantizma. On August 11, 2005, he started his own music company called Melankolia Müzik. In 2006, he released the album Kafile through his new company. On August 1, 2006, he married fellow rapper Kolera (Esen Güler). They released their first album together, İkimizi Anlatan Bir Şey, in 2007. He continued to release solo albums like Kötü İnsanları Tanıma Senesi (2008) and Şarkı Koleksiyoncusu (2009). He released another album with Kolera, Bendeki Sen, in 2010. Since then, he has released several more albums, including Saydam Odalar (2011), Kalp Hastası (2013), Ahmak Islatan (2017), and Kağıt Kesikleri (2022).

Music Journey

Early Life and Career Beginnings (1978–2002)

Yunus Özyavuz was born on August 17, 1978, in Samsun. He completed his primary and high school education in Samsun. He became interested in music after listening to African music from his mother and Italian music from his father. He started his music career as a DJ at a local radio station in Samsun. During this time, he used the name DJ Rapper M.C. (DJ Rapper Mic Check). In 1997, he moved to Istanbul to study Persian Language and Literature at Istanbul University, graduating four years later.

In 1998, he formed the rap group Kuvvetmira. In 1999, he appeared on the album Yeraltı Operasyonu as Silahsız Kuvvet. He also released an album called Gerilim 99 (Promo) and his first EP, Pesimist EP 1, that same month. In 2000, he released the album Toplama Kampı with Ceza. A year later, he released Sözlerim Silahım and One Second. In 2002, he released the album İhtiyar Heyeti and produced Ceza's album Med Cezir. He also released his self-titled album Sagopa Kajmer and On Kurşun.

Major Albums and Collaborations (2003–2009)

In 2004, Sagopa Kajmer announced that he would use the stage name Sagopa Kajmer from then on, after using Silahsız Kuvvet for seven years. That same year, he produced the album Rapstar and appeared in the music video for "Neyim Var Ki" with Ceza. In June 2003, his new album, Bir Pesimistin Gözyaşları, was released. Music videos were made for the songs "Maskeli Balo" and "Karikatür Komedya." In 2004, he produced Dr. Fuchs's album Huzur N Darem. He also created music for Cem Yılmaz's comedy film G.O.R.A..

On August 19, 2005, he released the album Romantizma. The music video for his song "Vasiyet" won the Best Video Clip award at the 12th Kral TV Video Music Awards in 2005. He also released Pesimist EP 3 that year. To produce his own music, Sagopa Kajmer opened Melankolia Müzik with Kolera on August 11, 2005. On January 1, 2006, he produced the album Kafile with other members of Kuvvetmira. On May 18, 2006, he released Pesimist EP 4 - Kurşun Asker on his website.

On April 26, 2007, he released his first album with Kolera, İkimizi Anlatan Bir Şey. In 2008, his solo album Kötü İnsanları Tanıma Senesi was released, with music videos for "Ben Hüsrana Komşuyum" and "Düşersem Yanarım." He released the single "Bu Şarkıyı Zevk İçin Yaptık" with Kolera on May 6, 2008. On December 27, 2008, he released Pesimist EP 5 - Kör Cerrah online. In 2009, he released a collection of songs from his previous EPs called Şarkı Koleksiyoncusu. He also released two more singles with Kolera, "Beslenme Çantam" and "Hain."

New Albums and Tours (2010–2021)

In 2010, he released his second album with Kolera, Bendeki Sen. Music videos were made for "Bir Dizi İz" and "Merhametine Dön." Bendeki Sen was nominated for Best Album at the TRT Music Awards. He also produced Kafile 2 in 2010 and released the single "Ardından Bakarım." In 2011, he released the album Saydam Odalar, which featured Kolera on "Kaç Kaçabilirsen" and "Bu İşlerden Elini Çek." A music video was made for "Kaç Kaçabilirsen."

In 2013, Sagopa Kajmer announced he was working on a new album. He went on a tour called Pesimist Orchestra in March, April, and May 2013, performing in 15 different cities. On July 8, 2013, his new album Kalp Hastası was released, featuring Kolera on "İster İstemez." He released the song "Düşünmek İçin Vaktin Var" with a music video online the day before the album's release. This song was later added to Kalp Hastası. Two weeks later, a music video for "Uzun Yollara Devam" was released. In early 2014, he began working on his new EP Pesimist EP 6, which was released on March 20, 2014.

On May 6, 2014, he released the song "Abrakadabra" with Birol Giray (BeeGee) for free online. He also helped compose and sang backing vocals for Cem Adrian's song "Artık Bitti." In early 2015, he shared instrumentals of some of his songs on YouTube, releasing them as Underground Years. On June 17, 2015, his new song "Bilmiyorum" was released on YouTube. On November 12, 2015, his second song with Birol Giray, "Naber," was released with a music video. In March 2016, it was announced he was working on a new song, "Tecrübe," with DJ Tarkan. On December 31, 2016, his song "366.Gün" was released. In 2017, he released "Ne Kaybederdin" on his YouTube channel.

On August 23, 2017, Sagopa Kajmer announced a new album, Ahmak Islatan, which was released on September 1, 2017. On December 31, 2017, he released "Sorun Var" on YouTube, with its music video released on May 29, 2018. On September 25, 2018, he announced his new song "Oldu Olanlar," which was released on October 1, 2018. On his 41st birthday, he released "Avutsun Bahaneler." On November 29, 2019, Sagopa Kajmer released the EP Sarkastik, with a music video for "Toz Taneleri."

On June 12, 2020, he released "Siyah" featuring Patron. On July 17, 2020, he released "Bu Sen Değilsin" with Faruk Sabancı. On August 17, 2020, he released the "Yunus EP." On February 19, 2021, he released the album "Tek," which compiled his duet songs with Kolera from 2005 to 2011. On May 7, 2021, he released the single "Saldırground." On November 11, 2022, he released "Onlarla Konuşuyorum" with Defkhan. On July 1, 2021, he released the single "Kim," which he recorded in 2018.

Recent Works (2022-Present)

On June 2, 2022, he released the album Kağıt Kesikleri. The first music video from the album was for the song "Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla," a duet with Şehinşah. On September 22, 2023, he released the song "Geceler," a duet with Mine Koşan. On November 15, 2023, he released the song "İstesem de Söyleyemem."

Artistic Style

Music Style

Sagopa Kajmer is known for his rap music. He started his career as Silahsız Kuvvet. Later, he began to use sounds and melodies from traditional Turkish folk music, called türküs, in his songs. While he used some strong language early in his career, he stopped using it later on. His voice is sometimes thought to have an Arabesque style, which is a popular Turkish music genre. His 2003 album, Romantizma, included more songs about love than his earlier works.

Influences

Sagopa Kajmer has said that the music of Run-DMC greatly influenced his rap style. He was also inspired by the writings of famous poets like Omar Khayyam, Ferdowsi, and Rumi. In an interview, he mentioned: "When I was little, I thought I was Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC. LL Cool J and Fat Boys are also very important names. I got my influence from them."

Personal Life

Sagopa Kajmer's mother was Serpil Özyavuz, and his father is Mehmet Özyavuz. He also has a brother named Emre Özyavuz. He studied Persian language and literature at Istanbul University. On August 1, 2006, he married fellow rapper Esen Güler, known as Kolera. They announced their divorce on November 20, 2017, after 11 years of marriage. His mother, Serpil Özyavuz, passed away on June 2, 2024.

Awards and Nominations

In 2002, Sagopa Kajmer won the Best DJ award for 2001. He won the Best DJ award again the next year but chose not to attend the awards ceremony.

On April 20, 2005, during the Karabiber Tour in Sakarya, Sagopa won several awards. These included 'Best Male Rap/Hip-Hop Artist of 2004', 'Best DJ of 2004', 'Best Album of 2004', and 'Best Song of 2004'. His then-girlfriend Kolera also won 'Best Female Rap/Hip-Hop Artist of 2004'.

On May 11, 2006, at the Kral TV Video Music Awards, the music video for his song "Vasiyet" won the award for Best Music Video. He was also nominated as the Best Turkish Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards. His album with Kolera, Bendeki Sen, was nominated for Best Album at the TRT Music Awards, based on public votes.
