Sainey Nyassi's Football Journey
Sainey Nyassi started his football career in his home country, Gambia. He played for a team called Gambia Ports Authority in their top league.
Playing in the United States
A coach named Steve Nicol from the New England Revolution team saw Sainey play. This was during the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Sainey signed with the Revolution soon after, along with his teammate Kenny Mansally.
Sainey officially joined the Revolution on August 31, 2007. He played his first game in the MLS on September 9, 2007. He came into the game as a substitute against D.C. United. This was his only game during the 2007 season.
Nyassi made his first start and scored his first MLS goal on March 29, 2008. This happened in the Revolution's first game of the 2008 season. They won 3-0 against Houston Dynamo. He became the youngest Revolution player to start a season-opening game. His goal was even named "Goal of the Week" for that week! In the 2009 season, he won "MLS Goal of the Week" again. This was for a great goal he scored against FC Dallas.
Sainey became an important player for the Revolution for the next four seasons. He played in at least 20 games each year. In 2012, he had a hamstring injury. He was released by New England on May 16, 2013.
Moving to New Teams
On May 27, 2013, Nyassi signed with D.C. United. He played for them for a short time.
Then, on June 9, 2014, Sainey signed with a Finnish club called RoPS. He played 19 games for them and scored 4 goals.
In February 2015, Nyassi joined FC Edmonton. He played for this team for three seasons. After the 2017 season, he left the club.
Playing for His Country
Nyassi has played for Gambia at different youth levels. He played for the Gambian Under-17 team in the 2005 U-17 World Championships. He also played for the Under-20 team in the 2007 U-20 FIFA Championships.
He scored his first goal for the senior national team on September 4, 2010. This was in a game against Namibia. The game was part of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
