A Look at Saint-Florent's Past
Saint-Florent was built by the Genoese people in the 1500s. They used it as a military base to control the Corsican people living nearby. Later, in 1764, France sent soldiers and settlers to Saint-Florent to take over the independent Corsican island.
However, the Corsican army, led by Pasquale Paoli (often called "the Father of Corsica"), fought back. With help from the British fleet, led by Horatio Nelson, they took Saint-Florent back in 1794. This was during a short time when Corsica was ruled by both the British and Corsicans.
