Sainte-Marie-Outre-l'Eau is a small village, also called a commune, in northwest France. It is located in the Calvados department, which is part of the Normandy region.

Its name means "Saint Mary beyond the Water." This name likely comes from its location near a river or stream.

History of Sainte-Marie-Outre-l'Eau

Sainte-Marie-Outre-l'Eau has always been a small place. For a long time, until the early 1900s, it was mostly just a collection of farms. The village was quite isolated because there was no direct road connecting it to nearby towns like Pont-Farcy. This meant it was harder for people to travel in and out.

Geography and Location

Sainte-Marie-Outre-l'Eau is a very small village. It is located about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the town of Pont-Farcy. The main road passing through the village is the D307.

The village is mostly made up of farm houses and has a church. Only about 81 people live here. This number probably includes people living on nearby farms too. Other small places close by are Pont-Bellanger and Beaumesnil. For bigger towns, people usually go to Villedieu-les-Poeles or Vire.

The village is also close to a popular tourist spot called the Grotte de Bion. This is a cave that many visitors enjoy exploring.
