Salah al-Din Attallah Suheimat (Arabic: صلاح الدين عطالله السحيمات) was an important figure in Jordan. He was born in 1914 and passed away on November 30, 1966. Salah Suheimat served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the city of Al Karak.

His father, Sheikh Attallah Suheimat, was also a national leader. He was part of the first Legislative Council of the Emirate of Transjordan. His father also held many political jobs in the Ottoman Empire and later in Transjordan. Salah's grandfather, Sheikh Sulieman Suheimat, was a leader too. He was a member of the first city council in Karak in the 1890s.

Salah Suheimat went to primary school in Karak. He finished his high school education in Salt (As-Salt). Later, he earned a diploma in Agriculture from Beirut, Lebanon. In 1946, Salah Suheimat became the first Secretary General of the Jordanian parliament. This means he was a top administrator for the parliament.

What Salah Suheimat Did

Salah Suheimat had many important jobs during his career. He worked in different parts of the government. Here are some of his main roles:

  • He was the Director of Publications. This meant he oversaw official documents and public information.
  • He served as a military governor for areas like Balqa. He also acted as a governor for other parts of Jordan.
  • In 1960, he led Jordan's group to fix and improve relations with Iraq.
  • He was the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Jordanian House of Representatives. This committee dealt with Jordan's relationships with other countries.
  • He worked as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior. This ministry handles internal affairs and security.
  • He was the Secretary General of the Jordanian parliament several times (1946–48, 1951–53, 1961–62).
  • From 1963 until his death in 1966, he was a Member of the Jordanian parliament.

Awards and Honors

Salah Suheimat received high honors for his service. He was given The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Star of Jordan. He also received The Grand Cordon of the Order of Independence. These are very important awards in Jordan. He also received awards from other Arab and European countries.

His Family

Salah Suheimat had two brothers. They were General Muhammad Suheimat and Izzeddin Suheimat.

His Passing

Salah Suheimat passed away in Amman on November 30, 1966. He was buried in the Prophet Noah cemetery in his hometown of Al Karak.
