This county didn't last for very long. It was created in 1791, which means it was established when the United States was still quite new. However, by the year 1800, Salem County was no longer its own separate area.
How Did Salem County Change?
In 1800, Salem County became part of a new, larger area called the Sumter District. This was a common way for governments to organize and reorganize their land back then. So, while Salem County itself disappeared, its land and people became part of something new.
