Communities in Salem Township

Salem Township is made up of several smaller areas. These are often called "unincorporated communities" because they don't have their own separate local governments.

Brookeville

  • Brookeville is a small community within the township. You can find it at coordinates 42°22′38″N 83°34′43″W.

Salem Village

  • Salem is a community located in the northeastern part of the township. It was first settled way back in 1825.
  • A post office opened here on June 4, 1831. It was first called Rider's, then Renwick, and finally Salem in 1846.
  • The post office closed for a while but reopened in 1876. It has been called Salem ever since.

Summit Village

  • Summit was an early settlement that started with a post office in 1833. It was a stop for travelers between Ann Arbor and Pontiac.
  • The Summit post office closed in 1876 and its services moved to the Salem post office.

Worden Village

  • Worden is another community in the township. The Pebbles family settled here in 1831.
  • It had a post office called Pebbles Corner starting in 1838.
  • The post office was renamed Worden in 1882. It was also a stop on the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Michigan Railroad.
  • The Worden post office stopped operating in 1902.
