Life Story of a General
Early Life and Training
Salih Omurtak was born in 1889 in a city called Thessaloniki. This city is now in Greece, but back then it was part of the Ottoman Empire.
He started his military journey by going to the Military College. He finished his studies in 1907 and became a lieutenant. After more training at the Staff College in 1910, he became a "staff officer." This meant he helped plan important military actions for the Ottoman Army.
Joining the Turkish Revolution
In 1920, Salih Omurtak went to Ankara and joined the Turkish revolutionaries. These were people fighting for Turkey's independence. He led different groups of soldiers during and after the Turkish War of Independence. One of the groups he commanded was the 61st Division.
He was promoted to higher ranks as he continued to serve. In 1926, he became a Mirliva, and in 1930, he was promoted to Ferik. From 1940 onwards, he was the commander of the First Army, holding the rank of Orgeneral, which is like a four-star general.
Leading the Turkish Armed Forces
On August 1, 1946, Salih Omurtak was chosen to be the Chief of the General Staff for the Turkish Armed Forces. This was a very important job, as he was in charge of the entire military. He held this position until June 8, 1949.
After that, he became a member of the Military High Advisory Board. He worked there until he retired from the military on July 6, 1950.
Later Life and Legacy
Salih Omurtak passed away on June 23, 1954, in Ankara. His body was later moved to a special burial place called the Turkish State Cemetery. This cemetery is where many important people from Turkish history are laid to rest.
