Sally Elizabeth Phillips (born 1969/1970) is a talented English actress, comedian, and TV presenter. She is well-known for creating and writing the funny sketch comedy show Smack the Pony.
Sally has also starred in many popular TV shows. These include Jam & Jerusalem where she played Natasha "Tash" Vine, and Miranda as Tilly. You might also recognize her as Sophie in I'm Alan Partridge or Jenny Pope in Parents. She even played the fictional Prime Minister of Finland, Minna Häkkinen, in the US TV series Veep.
On the big screen, Sally co-starred as Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. She also played the character Shazza in all three Bridget Jones movies. From 2004 to 2019, she was the main voice in the BBC Radio 4 comedy show Clare in the Community.

Early Life and School Days
Sally Elizabeth Phillips was born in 1969/1970 in Hong Kong. At that time, Hong Kong was under British rule. Her father, Tim, worked for British Airways. Because of his job, Sally and her family lived in many different countries. These included places in the Far East, the Middle East, Italy, and Australia.
When she was 13, Sally went to a boarding school called Wycombe Abbey School. There, she studied for her school exams, known as O-Levels and A-Levels.
After school, Sally went to New College, Oxford University. She studied Italian and linguistics, which is the study of language. At Oxford, she joined a comedy group called the Oxford Revue. She often played male characters in their shows. Some of her friends from this group, like Stewart Lee and Richard Herring, later became famous comedians too.
Sally earned a top degree from Oxford. She thought about studying for a PhD (a very advanced degree) about "Spaghetti Western" movies. But she decided to study drama instead. She trained with a theatre company called Théâtre de Complicité.
Her Acting Career
Sally Phillips performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival nine times in a row. This is a huge arts festival in Scotland. She was in many shows there, including a funny version of Hamlet.
Her first TV role was in 1994 in a show called Fist of Fun. Soon after, she appeared in Alas Smith and Jones. In 1997, Sally played a receptionist in the popular comedy I'm Alan Partridge. She also had a role in Holding the Baby.
In 1999, Sally became very well known for Smack the Pony. She helped create, write, and perform in this sketch comedy show with Fiona Allen and Doon Mackichan. She was even nominated for an award for best new female performer!
Sally starred in the BBC1 series Rescue Me in 2001. She also had small roles in movies like Mean Machine and Birthday Girl. She even wrote episodes for the cartoon Bob and Margaret.
In 2003, a newspaper called The Observer named her one of the 50 funniest people in British comedy. She played Shazza in Bridget Jones's Diary, a character based on the film's director.
From 2004 to 2019, Sally was the main voice in the BBC radio comedy Clare in the Community. In 2006, she appeared in the Australian movie BoyTown. She also played Clare Winchester in the BBC2 science fiction comedy Hyperdrive.
Between 2006 and 2009, Sally had a regular role in the BBC comedy Jam & Jerusalem. She played Natasha "Tash" Vine, a funny and a bit scatterbrained character.
In 2009, Sally took on the role of Tilly in Miranda. Tilly was the slightly annoying, upper-class friend of Miranda Hart's character. The show was very popular, and Sally stayed with it until it ended in 2015. She also appeared in Skins as Pandora's mother.
Sally wrote her first movie script, The Decoy Bride, which started filming in 2010. She also had a supporting role in the film. It was released in 2012. In December 2010, she was in the BBC1 drama Accidental Farmer.
In 2012, Sally played the main role in the Sky 1 comedy Parents. She also appeared in the CBeebies show Justin's House and Something Special with Justin Fletcher.
Sally appeared in the HBO comedy series Veep as Minna Häkkinen. Minna was a made-up Prime Minister of Finland. In 2014, Sally narrated the first series of The Supervet on Channel 4.
In 2015, Sally was in several TV shows, including House of Fools and Death in Paradise. She also starred in the comedy movie Burn Burn Burn and the TV film Distinguished Ladies.
Sally played Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016). She also returned as Shazza in Bridget Jones's Baby. In 2016, she presented a BBC documentary called A World Without Down's Syndrome?. This show looked at the possible effects of new medical tests.
In 2017, Sally competed in series 5 of Taskmaster, a fun game show. She came in second place. She also appeared in All Star Musicals and Tim Vine Travels in Time. In 2018, she played Lou in Trollied.
In 2020, she played Gibby in the Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner. She also won the special Christmas edition of The Great British Sewing Bee on BBC One.
In 2022, Sally starred as Gina in the Australian comedy film How to Please a Woman. In 2023, she played Tessa in the Netflix romantic comedy Love at First Sight. In January 2024, she was a guest host on the BBC One quiz show Pointless. She also starred as Ingrid in the Australian-British comedy series Austin, which started in June 2024.
Personal Life
Sally Phillips was married to Andrew Bermejo for 14 years. They have three sons together. One of her sons has Down's syndrome. Sally and Andrew divorced in 2017.
Sally is a Christian. She supports the Blue Apple Theatre in Hampshire, UK. This theatre group creates performances with adults who have learning disabilities.
