History of Salmon, Texas
Salmon started because the nearby town of Elkhart grew quite a bit. It was first called Bryon Switch. The community was later renamed Salmon. This happened after Meredith D. Salmon, who was the postmaster, opened a post office inside a general store.
Early Days and Growth
In 1914, Salmon was a busy place. It had three general stores, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers), and a sawmill (a place where logs are cut into lumber). The town also had telephone service. About 100 people lived there at that time.
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Salmon changed a lot over the years.
- In 1925 and 1933, only 10 residents were reported.
- Then, in 1927 and 1929, the population jumped back to 100 people.
- By 1939, about 80 people lived in Salmon. It also had a church, four businesses, and several homes.
Later Years and Modern Day
The post office in Salmon stayed open until the mid-1950s. After it closed, residents had to get their mail from Elkhart. In 1956, the population dropped to just 25 people, and there were no businesses left. However, by 1964, the population increased to 100 again. It then went down to 20 residents in 1970 and stayed at that level in 2000.
As of 1980, Salmon had one church, one business, and a few houses. To help remember the town's past, a replica of the old post office and general store was built in 2002. This was done by a family member of Meredith D. Salmon, the very first postmaster.
