Salvadore Cammarano facts for kids
Salvadore Cammarano (who was also known as Salvatore) was a very busy Italian writer of opera stories and plays. He was born in Naples on March 19, 1801, and passed away there on July 17, 1852. He is probably most famous for writing the story for the opera Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) for the composer Gaetano Donizetti.
Salvadore wrote many opera stories for Donizetti. These included L'assedio di Calais (1836), Belisario (1836), Pia de' Tolomei (1837), Roberto Devereux (1837), Maria de Rudenz (1838), Poliuto (1838), and Maria di Rohan (1843). He also wrote Ines de Castro for Giuseppe Persiani.
Later, Salvadore wrote stories for the famous composer Verdi. These operas were Alzira (1845), La battaglia di Legnano (1849), and Luisa Miller (1849). Sadly, Salvadore died in July 1852. Because of this, another writer named Leone Emanuele Bardare had to finish the story for Verdi's opera Il trovatore (1853). Salvadore also started working on an opera story based on William Shakespeare's play King Lear, which was going to be called Re Lear. But he died before he could finish it. We still have his detailed plan for the story, though!
Salvadore came from a family of artists. His father, Giuseppe Cammarano, was a painter and designed sets for plays. His son, Michele Cammarano, also became a painter.
