Salvatore Cammarano facts for kids
Salvatore Cammarano (sometimes spelled Salvadore) was an Italian writer who lived from 1801 to 1852. He was famous for writing librettos, which are the words or stories for operas. He also wrote plays. Cammarano was born and died in Naples, a city in Italy.
He is best known for writing the story for the opera Lucia di Lammermoor in 1835. This opera was composed by Gaetano Donizetti.

Working with Famous Composers
Salvatore Cammarano wrote many librettos for important composers of his time.
Librettos for Donizetti
Cammarano worked a lot with Gaetano Donizetti. Besides Lucia di Lammermoor, he wrote the stories for these operas:
- L'assedio di Calais (1836)
- Belisario (1836)
- Pia de' Tolomei (1837)
- Roberto Devereux (1837)
- Maria de Rudenz (1838)
- Poliuto (1838)
- Maria di Rohan (1843)
He also wrote Ines de Castro for another composer named Giuseppe Persiani.
Librettos for Verdi
Cammarano also wrote librettos for the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi. These include:
- Alzira (1845)
- La battaglia di Legnano (1849)
- Luisa Miller (1849)
He was working on the libretto for Verdi's opera Il trovatore (1853) when he passed away in July 1852. Another writer, Leone Emanuele Bardare, finished the story for him.
Unfinished Works
Cammarano also started writing a libretto for an opera based on William Shakespeare's play King Lear. He called it Re Lear. Sadly, he died before he could finish this project. Only a plan or outline for the story still exists today.
