Salviati Planisphere facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Salviati Planisphere is an old world map created around 1525. It shows what the Spanish Empire knew about the Earth at that time. This map includes the eastern coasts of North America and South America, as well as the Strait of Magellan.

What makes this map special is that it doesn't just guess what's in unknown areas. Instead, it leaves those parts blank. This was like an invitation for future explorers to discover and fill in those empty spaces.

Who Made the Salviati Planisphere?

This map is thought to have been drawn by Nuño García de Toreno. He was in charge of the Casa de Contratación in Seville, Spain. The Casa de Contratación was a very important government office. It managed Spain's trade and exploration trips.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The map is named after Cardinal Giovanni Salviati. He was a special diplomat for the Pope, called a papal nuncio, in Spain from 1525 to 1530. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who was also the King of Spain at the time, gave the map to Cardinal Salviati.

Where Is the Map Now?

Today, the Salviati Planisphere is kept safe in Florence, Italy. You can find it at the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana. It's a valuable piece of history that helps us understand how people saw the world centuries ago.
