In Liverpool, Sam went to the Liverpool Collegiate School. He was also a singer in the choir at Liverpool Cathedral. Even when he was young, he showed a talent for acting by performing monologues. Before becoming an actor, he worked for three years in the Civil Service in Liverpool. Later, he studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He finished his studies in 1967 and started performing in theaters across the UK.
