Samo Petrevski-Seton (born 19 February 1998) is a former professional Australian rules football player. He played for the Carlton Football Club and West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was chosen by Carlton as the sixth pick in the 2016 national draft. Samo played his first game for Carlton in the first round of the 2017 season.
Early Life and Background
Samo Petrevski-Seton spent his first few years on a cattle station near Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia. His dad worked there as a stockman, looking after cattle. When Samo was three, his family moved to Halls Creek.
Samo is an Indigenous Australian. He also has family from Macedonia on his mother's side. His grandpa moved to Australia from Macedonia. Samo grew up speaking Kriol as his first language. He learned standard English later when he moved to Perth. He went to Clontarf Aboriginal College from 2013 to 2015. Besides football, Samo also enjoyed competitive bull riding. He started bull riding when he was 12 years old.
Football Journey
Junior Football Days
Samo Petrevski-Seton started playing football for teams in Halls Creek. He played in the junior leagues of the East Kimberley Football Association. When he moved to Perth for school, he began training with the Claremont Football Club. This club helps players from the Kimberley region.
Samo played four seasons in the WAFL colts, which is an under-18 competition. He played his first colts game when he was only 15. He then played his first senior game for Claremont at age 17. This was early in the 2015 season. Samo also played for Western Australia in the under-16 and under-18 teams. He was even named in the All-Australian team at the 2015 AFL Under 18 Championships. This means he was one of the best players in the country for his age group.
AFL Career Highlights
The Carlton team chose Samo Petrevski-Seton with their first pick in the 2016 national draft. He was the sixth player chosen overall. He played his first AFL game in the first round of the 2017 season. This game was against Richmond at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
After a great game in round seven, where he had 21 disposals (getting the ball 21 times), four marks (catching the ball), three tackles, and kicked two goals, he was nominated for the 2017 AFL Rising Star award. This award is for the best young players in the league.
In his second year, 2018, Samo played in all 22 games. He averaged about 16 disposals per game and kicked 5 goals for the year. He also averaged 4.3 tackles per match.
In 2019, Samo had an amazing game against the Western Bulldogs in round 5. He got 35 disposals, which was 9 more than his previous best. He also kicked an important goal in the third quarter. Many experts thought he was the best player on the field in Carlton's first win of the 2019 season.
After the 2021 AFL season, Samo wanted to move back to his home state of Western Australia. He asked to be traded to West Coast. He officially joined the West Coast Eagles on 7 October.
After the 2023 season ended, Samo Petrevski-Seton was delisted by the West Coast Eagles. This means he was no longer part of their team.
