Location in Alaska

Samalga Island (Aleut: Samalĝa; Russian: Самалга) is a small, uninhabited island in Alaska. It is the very last island on the western side of the Fox Islands group. These islands are part of the larger Aleutian Islands chain.

Samalga Island is about 5.36 miles (8.63 kilometers) long. It sits right off the southwestern tip of Umnak Island. The island covers a land area of about 1.589 square miles (4.116 square kilometers). No one lives on Samalga Island.

Where is Samalga Island Located?

Samalga Island is the westernmost island in the Fox Islands. These islands are a part of the eastern Aleutian Islands in Alaska. To its west, the island is separated from the Islands of Four Mountains group by a waterway called the Samalga Pass. This pass is like a natural channel between the islands.

Samalga's Unique Time Zone Spot

Samalga Island holds a special place on the map. It is the farthest point west in the Aleutian Island chain that still uses the Alaska time zone (UTC−9). This means that if you travel further west from Samalga, the time zone changes. It is also the closest Alaskan island to the state of Hawaii.
