Samantha Bricio (born November 22, 1994) is a professional volleyball player from Mexico. She made history as the youngest player ever to join the Mexican national team. Samantha has won many awards throughout her career. These include Best Scorer and Best Server at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. She also earned the Best Scorer award at the 2011 Youth Pan-American Cup, 2011 Junior Pan-American Cup, and 2013 Pan-American Cup.

Samantha Bricio was born on November 22, 1994, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She is 188 centimeters (about 6 feet 2 inches) tall and weighs 58 kilograms (about 128 pounds). Samantha went to Preparatoria de Universidad del Valle de Atemajac de Guadalajara High School. Her brother, Irving Alberto José, is also a talented volleyball player. He was part of the Mexican men's national team that won the Pan-American Cup in 2007. Samantha earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Southern California in 2016.

Samantha's Volleyball Journey

Early Career: 2008

Samantha started her journey by winning a gold medal at the Mexican National Games. This was in the 13–14-year-old age group. After that, she won a silver medal at the NORCECA U-18 Championship. This helped her team qualify for the 2009 U-18 World Championships. She also played with her national junior team at the 2008 NORCECA U-20 Championship. Even though she was very young, she won the "Rising Star" award for her great performance.

Growing as a Player: 2009

In 2009, Samantha played in the 2009 FIVB Girls Youth World Championship in Thailand. She was only 14 years old, making her the youngest player on the team. Her team made it to the second round for the first time ever, finishing ninth. Samantha's skills caught the eye of the Mexican Volleyball Federation. They saw her as a potential player for future big events like the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2012 Olympics. At the end of that year, Samantha and her brother Irving received an award from the Guadalajara city council for their achievements.

National Team Debut: 2010

Samantha played in the Guadalajara Volleyball Festival before the National Games. She then joined Mexico's youth volleyball team. They won a silver medal at the NORCECA Youth Championship. Samantha was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at this event. This win also helped her team qualify for the 2011 Girls Youth World Championship.

Later in 2010, Samantha played her first international games with the senior national team. This was at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. She won the Best Scorer and Best Server awards, and Mexico finished fifth. At just 15 years old, Samantha was the youngest player ever on the Mexican national team. She also won the Private High Schools National Championship with her high school team. The Guadalajara city council gave her the Medal of Sporting Merit for her achievements. She also received an athletic scholarship.

International Recognition: 2011

In March 2011, Samantha helped her regional team, Jalisco, qualify for the National Games. She played with Mexico's junior team in the first Junior Pan-American Cup. Her team finished fourth, and Samantha received the Best Scorer award. She then played in the first Girls' Youth Pan-American Cup, winning a silver medal and another Best Scorer award.

Samantha also played in a championship in Arizona, where several colleges noticed her talent. She decided to attend the University of Southern California. She represented Mexico at the 2011 FIVB Girls Youth World Championship, where her team finished twelfth. Samantha and some teammates joined a special program to prepare players for the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

In September, Samantha played in the senior continental championship. Her team finished fifth. She then represented Mexico at the 2011 Pan American Games. Her team finished eighth after a match against Canada. Samantha said she felt excited but also a bit pressured playing at home. She received another athletic scholarship and her second Medal of Sporting Merit from the Guadalajara city council.

College Success: 2012

In 2012, Samantha helped her high school team win the Private High Schools National Championship again. She was also chosen for the All-Star team. She received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Southern California after getting 12 offers from different colleges. In August, she led the USC Trojans to win the Texas A&M Invitational. She was named the Most Valuable Player and Pac-12's Freshman of the Week.

After her first college season, Samantha was named Volleyball Magazine's NCAA Freshman of the Year. She also made the All-America third team. The American Volleyball Coaches Association gave her an All-America honorable mention. Samantha was selected for the Pac-12 All-Conference Team, the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team, and the All-Pacific Region Team. She was also named the AVCA Pacific Region and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. She received her team's Best Scorer and Best Server awards. She represented Jalisco at the Mexican National Games, winning a silver medal in the 17–18-year-old junior category.

Continued Achievements: 2013

Samantha played in the 2013 Pan-American Cup with her U-20 national team. This was a practice for the 2013 FIVB Women's Junior World Championship. She received the Best Scorer award at this event.

Professional Career: 2016

While at USC, Samantha won the Honda Sports Award in 2016. This award recognizes the best collegiate female volleyball player in the nation.

Samantha also played with the American Premier Volleyball League club Chesapeake Rising Tide. Her team won the bronze medal at the 2016 league tournament. After that, she signed a two-year contract with the Italian league champion club Imoco Volley Conegliano. She was selected for the All-Star game. She then helped her team win the Italian Supercup, where she was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 24 points.

Challenges and Triumphs: 2017

In the 2016–17 CEV Champions League, Samantha helped her team win several matches. They also won the Italian Cup and took first place in the domestic league. In February, she got a virus and couldn't play, but her team still won the Italian Cup.

Later, Samantha got a sprain (a twisted ankle) during a domestic league match. This meant she couldn't play in the CEV Champions League Final Four, which her club hosted. Her team still managed to win the silver medal.
