A Look at Its Past
Samford University started a long time ago in 1841. It was first called Howard College. The very first students began classes on January 3, 1842. This happened in a town called Marion, Alabama.
Later, in 1887, the school moved to the city of Birmingham. Women were first allowed to attend Howard College in 1895. This was an important step for the school.
In 1927, the college added a new school for pharmacy. This helped students learn about medicines. The college also started offering master's degrees again in 1965.
On November 9, 1965, Howard College changed its name. It became Samford University. This was done to honor Frank Park Samford. He was a very helpful supporter of the school. The name also changed because there was already another Howard University in Washington, D.C.
