Samoset is a small community in Manatee County, Florida, in the United States. It's called a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area the government tracks for population. However, it does not have its own local city government. In 2020, about 4,146 people lived there. Samoset is part of a larger area that includes the cities of North Port, Bradenton, and Sarasota.

History of Samoset

Samoset became an official city in September 1926. At that time, about 1,034 people lived there. The name "Samoset" might have come from an Algonquin Native American chief named Samoset. However, a newspaper article from that time said the town was named after a train stop.

Early Development

The new city's official seal showed a Native American head, a palm tree, and the year 1926. These were surrounded by the name "Samoset" and "Florida." Before Samoset became a city, there were a few smaller neighborhoods. These included Listville, Hill Park, and Pinecrest. They all joined together to form the new city of Samoset.

William A. Thomas built the first general store in Samoset in 1925. It was a two-story brick building. The original city limits stretched from the edge of Bradenton south to what is now Cortez Road. It also went about a mile east of the old Bradenton-Sarasota Road. The city of Manatee was to the north. Manatee later joined with Bradenton in 1944 and is now known as East Bradenton.

Community Leaders and Changes

Early settlers like Thomas, George, and Luke Wyatt, along with Eva Felts, helped get electricity installed. When Samoset became a city, R.R. Rodeman was elected as its first mayor. Other important officials included G.L. Bryant as city clerk and W.W. Fry as town marshal. A group of city council members also helped lead the town.

Mayor Rodeman was also a developer. He created the neighborhoods of Listville, Hill Park, Pinecrest, and Sunshine Ridge. Soon after the town was formed, some residents tried to undo the city's incorporation. However, their attempt failed.

New Facilities and Dissolution

In October 1926, a new school opened in Samoset. It had 30 children and was located in the community hall. Two teachers, Mrs. Charles Bingham and Mrs. Gladys La Croix, taught the younger students. In March 1927, a post office opened, and Joseph E. Bryant became the postmaster. A new church, Missionary Baptist, also started in May of that year with 20 members.

In August 1927, S. Ed Curry became the new mayor of Samoset. Other new officials were also elected. In June 1928, another attempt to dissolve the town failed. However, in December of that year, the vote to abolish the town finally passed. After this, Samoset returned to being an unincorporated, rural area.
