Samson is a city located in Geneva County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the larger Dothan, Alabama area. In 2020, about 1,874 people lived in Samson. The city was officially formed in 1905 or 1906.
During the Great Depression, a store in Samson bought a very large amount of snuff. This product stayed at the town's train station for a long time. Because of this, Samson earned the nickname "Snuff City, U.S.A." Today, the city remembers this nickname with a special event on New Year's Eve. They drop a large rooster snuff can to celebrate the new year.
Later, some groups in Samson tried to change the city's nickname. They planted many red roses along the roads leading into town. They hoped to be known as the "City of a Million Roses." However, over time, the roses faded away, and the old nickname came back.
The city's current slogan is "Samson...We Grow Friendly People." A student from Samson High School created this slogan. The student won $100 in a contest for coming up with the best idea. The committee liked the slogan because it showed both the farming side of the town and how welcoming its people are.
