Samstagern is a village in Switzerland. It is located in the Richterswil area. This area is part of the Horgen district. Horgen is in the canton of Zürich. The beautiful Hüttnersee lake is also found in Samstagern.

What is Samstagern like?
About 2,851 people live in Samstagern. This number is growing quickly. Samstagern is a "ribbon development." This means it grew along the main road. This road connects Wädenswil and Einsiedeln.
You can still find some farms in Samstagern. They are mostly on the edges of the village. The main part of Samstagern grew from small groups of houses. These groups were called Weiler (hamlets). Two of these were Grüenfeld and Bärenbrüggli. Samstagern is also close to the city of Wädenswil. Wädenswil is on Lake Zürich. Many different clubs and groups are active in Samstagern.

Samstagern has its own primary school. The school building was built in 1870. It was updated in 2000. Around 190 students attend this school. They are taught in 10 different classes. For older students, higher schools are in Richterswil.
Getting around Samstagern
The A3 motorway separates Richterswil from Samstagern. But the village has great public transport. The Samstagern railway station opened in 1877. It was built by the Südostbahn (SOB) company.
Trains from Samstagern go to Einsiedeln and Wädenswil. This is the S13 line. The S-Bahn Zürich line S40 connects to Rapperswil. In the mornings and evenings, SOB trains also go to Arth-Goldau and Romanshorn. Local buses connect Samstagern to Pfäffikon (SZ). You can find a big shopping mall there called Seedamm-Center. Buses also go to Richterswil. The Zimmerbergbus line also serves the area. It connects the Zimmerberg region and parts of the Sihl Valley.
A look at Samstagern's past
The area around Richterswil was once ruled by noble families. This was until 1287. Then, until 1549, it belonged to the Knights Hospitaller. Samstagern was first written about in 1659. Later, in 1687, it was called "uff der Sambstageren." In 1773, it was known as "auf der Samstageren."
In 1550, the city of Zürich took control of the region. They created the Landvogtei Wädenswil. This rule ended when Napoleon Bonaparte formed the Swiss cantons. Richterswil-Samstagern was first part of the Helvetic Republic. It was in the District of Horgen. After 1803, it joined the Grossbezrik Horgen. This lasted until 1813. From 1814 to 1831, it was part of Oberamt Wädenswil. Since 1831, Samstagern has been part of the Richterswil municipality.
