About Samuel Tertius Galton

Samuel Tertius Galton was born in Duddeston, Birmingham, England. His father, Samuel "John" Galton, was a well-known scientist. He was part of a famous group called the Lunar Society. This group included many smart thinkers and scientists of their time.

Samuel Tertius also became the father of Francis Galton. Francis later became a very famous scientist during the Victorian era. Even though Samuel Tertius was not as famous as his father or son, he still followed his family's interest in science and new ideas.

Samuel Tertius took over his father's large businesses. He made some big changes, like stopping the family's weapons business in 1815. He was very interested in economics, which is the study of how money and goods are made and used. He even wrote papers about it! However, Samuel preferred to manage his businesses from a distance. He spent a lot of his time enjoying the money from his large properties.

His Family Life

Samuel Tertius grew up as a Quaker, which is a type of Christian faith. But in 1807, he decided to join the Anglican Church.

On March 30, 1807, Samuel married Violetta Darwin. She was one of fourteen children of Erasmus Darwin. Erasmus was a good friend and colleague of Samuel's father. Many children from the Lunar Society families grew up together. Because of this, several of them ended up marrying each other.
