Samuel Johnson, known by his stage name Samwell, is an American entertainer. He became famous online in 2007 because of his viral video called "What What (In the Butt)". This video made him an Internet celebrity, meaning he became well-known very quickly through the internet.
Early Life
Samwell was born in Greenville, South Carolina, in the United States. He went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. There, he earned a college degree.
Samwell's Career
Samwell is an independent artist, meaning he doesn't have a major record label. For a while, his popular "What What (In the Butt)" video was shared through Fatboy Slim's record label, Southern Fried Records. The video itself was made by Brownmark Films.
Viral Video Fame
Samwell's video gained even more attention when it was featured in the TV show South Park. In a 2008 episode called "Canada on Strike", they even recreated parts of his video.
In April 2008, Samwell was a guest on a BBC television show called Lily Allen and Friends. He was interviewed and performed a live version of his famous song with dancers.
Acting and Apps
Samwell has also acted in movies. He played a character named Adonis in the 2009 film Modus Operandi. Later, in 2014, he appeared as the Communications Officer in the movie Hamlet A.D.D..
In March 2010, a company called Special Entertainment released a fun iPhone app. It was called Shaky Advice from Samwell. This app worked like a Magic 8 Ball, giving users advice through short video clips of Samwell.
TV Appearances
In June 2010, Samwell was a guest on Comedy Central's Tosh.0. This TV show talks about viral videos. The episode shared the story of how his "What What" video was made. Samwell also performed an acoustic version of the song with Josh Homme. Josh Homme is the lead singer for the bands Queens Of The Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures.
The host of Tosh.0, Daniel Tosh, really enjoyed having Samwell on the show. He said Samwell was one of his best guests. Samwell returned to Tosh.0 in September 2010. He was nominated for an award during the show's second season.
