What's in a Name?
The name San has a cool history! In very old languages, called proto-Indo-European languages, San meant "speed" or "rapid stream." This makes sense for a river that flows quickly. In Celtic languages, another old group of languages, San simply meant "river." So, its name has always been connected to its watery nature!
Where the San River Flows
The San River starts high up in the Carpathian Mountains. It begins near a village called Sianky, at an elevation of 900 meters (about 2,950 feet). This spot is right on the border between Poland and Ukraine.
For about its first 50 kilometers (31 miles), the San River actually forms the border between these two countries. It's like a natural line dividing them!
Lake Solina: A Big Dam on the San
One of the most interesting features of the San River is Lake Solina. This is Poland's largest artificial lake. It was created by building a huge dam across the San River near the town of Lesko. This dam helps control the river's water and also creates a beautiful lake for people to enjoy.
