The San Bernardino milkvetch (scientific name: Astragalus bernardinus) is a special type of plant. It's known as a "milkvetch" and loves to grow in dry places. You can find it in deserts and on the slopes of mountains.

Where the San Bernardino Milkvetch Lives

This plant calls the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California its home. It also lives in parts of the Mojave Desert. You can find it on special high places in the desert called sky islands. These include the Ivanpah Mountains and the nearby New York Mountains. These mountains are right on the border between California and Nevada.

What the San Bernardino Milkvetch Looks Like

The San Bernardino milkvetch is a thin, wiry plant. It often grows in twisted clumps. Sometimes, it even holds onto other plants for support.

Stems and Leaves

Its stems can be from 10 to 50 centimeters long. That's about 4 to 20 inches! The stems are mostly smooth, but they can have some stiff hairs. The leaves can grow up to 14 centimeters long. They are made of small, spear-shaped leaflets that are spaced out.

Flowers and Fruit

The plant produces beautiful flowers. They grow in a loose group, with up to 25 light purple flowers in each cluster. These flowers look a bit like peas. After the flowers, the plant grows a fruit. This fruit is a pale-colored pod, like a bean pod. It can be up to 3 centimeters long. When it dries, it feels like paper.
