San Esteban is a town and the area around it, known as a municipality, in the country of Honduras. It is located in the northeast part of the Olancho department. San Esteban is found to the west of Dulce Nombre de Culmí, east of Gualaco, and north of Catacamas. A writer from Costa Rica, Oscar Núñez Oliva, wrote a book in 2000 called Los Gallos de San Esteban, which takes place in this municipality.

History of San Esteban

How San Esteban Got Its Name

The municipality of San Esteban was named to honor a friar named Esteban Verdelete. He was a missionary who helped teach the local people about Christianity.

When San Esteban Was Founded

San Esteban was founded in the year 1808. It was started by a friar from Guatemala named José Antonio Liendo y Goicoechea. At that time, the area was mainly home to indigenous people.

The municipality of San Esteban has several neighbors. To the north, it borders the municipalities of Trujillo and Iriona. To the south, it is next to the municipality of Catacamas. San Esteban stretches from the top of the Agalta valley. The Grande Agalta river flows through this area.
