San Felipe is a city and a municipality in Mexico. It is located in the northwest part of the state of Guanajuato. People often call it "San Felipe Torres Mochas". This nickname means "San Felipe stub-towers". The municipality is the largest in Guanajuato by size. It covers an area of 2,969.79 square kilometers. In 2010, about 106,952 people lived in San Felipe.

History of San Felipe
San Felipe was first started on January 21, 1562. It was founded by Francisco de Velasco. He followed orders from the viceroy, Luís de Velasco. The city was named San Felipe to honor King Philip II of Spain.
Over the years, the city's official name changed a few times. In 1889, it became "Ciudad González." This was to honor Manuel González, who was the governor of Guanajuato at that time. Later, in 1938, its name changed again to "Ciudad Hernández Álvarez." This new name honored Governor Enrique Hernández Álvarez.
However, in 1948, the city's name went back to its original "San Felipe." Even with all these official changes, people always called it "San Felipe Torres Mochas." This nickname is still used today.
Geography of San Felipe
San Felipe is located in the northwest part of the state of Guanajuato. It is the largest municipality in the state. Its total area is 2,969.79 square kilometers. This is about 9.50% of Guanajuato's entire surface.
San Felipe shares its borders with several other places. To the north, it borders the municipality of Ocampo. To the south, it borders León and Guanajuato. The municipality of Dolores Hidalgo is to its southeast. To the east, it borders San Diego de la Unión. San Felipe also borders two other Mexican states. To the north, it touches San Luis Potosí. To the west, it borders Jalisco.
