History of San Fernando de Henares
The story of San Fernando de Henares began in 1746. King Philip V bought the land to build a royal fabric factory. This factory would make cloth for the royal family and others.
How the Town Started
After King Philip V passed away, his son, Ferdinand VI, continued the project. He chose a person named Ventura de Argumosa to manage the new Royal Place.
Houses were built around the factory for the workers. This is how the town of San Fernando de Henares began to grow. A large square, now called Plaza de España, was created in front of the factory. Another square, Plaza de Fernando VI, was also built nearby.
Protecting Historic Buildings
Today, this whole area is very special. It has been declared a historic and artistic monument. This means the original houses and squares cannot be changed. This helps protect the town's history for everyone to see.
The Famous Factory Building
Over the years, the town has faced many challenges. The main factory building, which is a symbol of the town, has been used for different purposes. At one point, it even served as a hospice, a place for people who needed care.
Now, only the main front part of the factory, called the façade, remains. It has been fixed up and is now part of the new city hall building.
