San Jose is a small community in San Miguel County, New Mexico, United States. It is called a census-designated place, which means it is a special area defined for counting people. History of San Jose
San Jose was founded in 1803. The Spanish government in New Mexico gave land to 45 men and two women. The main goal for starting San Jose was to protect the eastern parts of the New Mexican settlements. These settlements in the Pecos River valley helped defend the area.
Many of the first people to settle in San Jose were called genizaros. These were people who did not own land. People from San Jose and other Pecos Valley settlements were often comancheros and ciboleros. Comancheros traded with the Comanche people. Ciboleros hunted bison on the Great Plains.
