San Luis is a lively town and a special area called a municipality in Cuba. It is located in the Santiago de Cuba Province. Imagine traveling about 19 kilometers (around 12 miles) north from the big city of Santiago de Cuba, and you will find San Luis!

A Look Back in Time: San Luis History
San Luis started as a ranch way back in 1827. It was a quiet place until something big happened: the railroad arrived! The trains helped the town grow much faster. San Luis officially became its own municipality, like a small local government area, on August 19, 1898.
People and Place: San Luis Today
In 2022, about 77,519 people lived in San Luis. The municipality covers a total area of 498 square kilometers (about 192 square miles). This means there are about 160 people living in each square kilometer.
The San Luis municipality is divided into smaller neighborhoods called barrios. These include Dos Caminos, La Luz, Majaguabo, Monte Dos Leguas, Norte, and Sur.
What San Luis Does: Economy and Jobs
San Luis is an important place for transportation because it is a railroad junction. This means many train lines meet here.
The town is also known for its agriculture. Farmers grow and process sugarcane and coffee. They also grow and trade different kinds of fruit. Some places in San Luis even roast coffee beans.
People in San Luis also raise animals, which is called stock raising. The area has mining for manganese, which is a type of metal. There are also big factories nearby called sugar mills, like Rafael Reyes and Paquito Rosales, that turn sugarcane into sugar.

- Antonio Maceo y Grajales - He was a very important general in the Liberation Army. People called him "The Bronze Titan" because he was so strong and brave.

- Pedro Meurice Estíu - He was an Archbishop in Santiago de Cuba.
